Scones

Simple Scones

Scones, which are baked from scratch, are better than instant scone mixture from packets.  Today I baked plain date scones.  They don't have spices, such as cinnamon, sugar or rind of citruses.
The five ingredients are flour, butter, dates, egg and milk.  I am sure everyone has them ready in the pantry, as dates or sultanas are better food for snacking than chocolates.
To serve the scones, cut in half and buttered, to go with tea or coffee.  Enjoy for morning or afternoon tea.
It freezes well.  Let freshly baked scones cool, then pack them in a sealed box, freeze immediately.

Freshly Baked Date Scones

The Recipe-Susy’s  Recipe

Date Scones
the ingredients

350g self-raising flour
65g butter (unsalted butter)
125 seeded dried dates, chopped
1 egg (50g)
1 cup milk

Method

Heat up the oven to 225 degrees C
Line a baking tray with baking paper
It is a straightforward method, I am sure everyone knows how to do
In a large bowl, place the flour and the butter, rub the flour onto butter thoroughly, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add in the dates.
Mix the milk with lightly beaten egg
Add the egg and milk mixture at once onto the flour and the dates and mix together quickly.  Transfer to a floured board then knead lightly for a few seconds.

Roll the dough to 1 cm thickness, cut into 12 squares or cut with scones cutter.

Place on a lined baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 13 minutes

Now you have a healthy and light date scones for everyone to have.  Happy Baking!

Simple Scone: what does it mean, it means that the scones are prepared with the traditional method, without adding any extra ingredients such as, yoghurt, cream, lemonade, sugar, honey, pumpkin etc.

Based on my recipe, you could bake savoury scones, what you need is omitting the dates, but adding some cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and herbs.
