Napa - Chinese Cabbage

Chinese cabbage or Napa cabbage is a very versatile vegetable, it can be cooked by itself or mixed with other vegetables.  It is used and very common in Asian cooking.


Using Napa in my cooking:
- shredded and mix with coconut salad dressing
- cook in spiced coconut milk, as sayur
- boiled and served with white sauce as a garnish
- stuffed with stuffing then braised
- Mushroom and napa for pancakes filling
- Mixed with other ingredients for stuffing mushrooms
- For Salad: shred the napa finely, add salt, toss and then drain the liquid.  Dressed it in lime and oil.



Recipes:
Sayur Sawi - Napa with spiced coconut milk

6 napa cabbage leaves, thinly sliced
1 cup of coconut milk
1 onion, thinly sliced
2 garlic, crushed
1 chilli,  chopped
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon flavoured prawn oil
Salt and sugar to taste

Method
Sauté the onion, garlic and chilli with oil until fragrant,  add in the hard part of the napa cabbage and cook for a minute.  Add in the white leaves and the coconut milk, cook it to a gentle simmer.
Add salt and sugar to taste, and the flavoured prawn oil, stir and cook for a minute.
Transfer to a warmed serving bowl and serve as a side dish.


Pancake Rolls with Napa and Mushroom Filling.
The filling:
Sauté the thinly sliced napa cabbage and mushrooms in oil, until cooked then add 1 crushed garlic,  white pepper, salt to taste.  Thickened by adding with corn flour, mix thoroughly and cook for 1 minutes or two.  Transfer the mixture onto a bowl.  Cool aside

Pancake Rolls
(Look up the recipe for pancake batter in the older post)
Place two spoons filling on a pancake, then cover and wrap it to enclose the filling.



Serve the fresh pancake rolls with chilli sauce.



Stuffed Mushrooms with Napa and Carrots
The filling: cooked shredded napa cabbage, 
 grated carrots, chopped mushrooms stocks and some Parmesan cheese, salt and vegetable oil
Mix these all ingredients together

Fill up the cavity of the mushroom with the filling, lightly packed.
Place on a greased oven tray, drizzle with extra oil
Bake in a hot oven 175 degrees C for 25 minutes until the mushrooms are golden brown.
Freshly Baked Stuffed Mushrooms

Serve the stuffed mushrooms with fish, chicken or meat.
OR
Serve it on its own and garnished with a salad.
