Steam It.


Cooking by steaming is easy, less mess and healthy, it's suitable for various dishes, from cooking vegetables, meat or fish to sweets.

Steamed Bread Roll


Yeast dough rolled and stuffed with a sweet bean paste is steamed and sliced. It makes beautiful little sweets.  I did those for a try, but it worked well.

You may be very familiar with steamed buns filled with sweet bean paste, Chinese cooking.  In Singapore, I bought one of those on a street corner, and it was so delicious, I thought that was as good as one that I could get in the China Town over here in Melbourne, or even better.   This sweet is served at any time of the day, for breakfast,  morning tea, lunch or in the afternoon.
What I did was similar only of different shapes, they looked pretty on the plate.
The steamed buns are so common in Java, you could buy from the street hawkers or in shops.  Mother used to purchase the sweet buns for us, and I loved them.

Steamed Vegetable
Steamed vegetables are excellent for garnishes, this cooked iceberg lettuce is dressed with olive oil and herb-dills.  Melted butter and herbs sauce is another variation to dress this vegetable, it makes an excellent garnish for fish or meat dishes.

The steamed iceberg lettuce is delicious as it is, treat it as a warm salad, squished with lime juice over before eating it, it is a delightful and refreshing hot vegetable salad.

The steamed flower bread roll is served with herb sauce butter



The Process
Steaming Iceberg Lettuce
Place halved iceberg lettuce heart on a steamer
drizzle with a teaspoon fresh oil

Steam for 6 - 7 minutes

Cooked steamed iceberg lettuce, ready
to dress up and serve

Steaming The Flower Bread Rolls
Steam the bread with the flower shape on a herb broth
cook and steam for 7 minutes, cover the pot
the steamed flowers are cooked


Steamed food is lighter, leaner, fresher than the food which is cooked in fat, it is suitable for everyone, it is an excellent diet for children to elderly people.

The steamed dishes can be served hot, or room temperature, they are very flexible that make the food preparation and the eating more enjoyable.


Recipe
The dough of the sliced stuffed bread rolls and flower bread rolls.
275 g plain flour
1 teaspoon dried yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
a dash of salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2/3 cup warm water
Method
Place the flour, sugar, salt in a bowl, mix them together, make a well in the middle
Add the oil onto warm water
Place the yeast in the middle of the well
Add in the warm water mixture
Mix, combine together to make a pliable dough
Knead the dough lightly for five minutes until soft and satiny
Place the dough in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and keep in a warm place to proof.
When the dough is doubled, it is ready for shaping

It has been a bleak Sunday in terms of weather, but I am sure we are all able to make the day brighter, catching up with friends by visiting or phoning or rugged up to go for a walk for fresh air.

Monday is the best day for us all, as it is the starts of the weekdays, I could see all young mothers are busy to get the kiddies to go to school or kinder.  The children have a good time playing in the school ground. It's all good.  Have a happy, healthy and enjoyable week.
