Fig is one of my favourite fruits, the shape is simple but cute, the taste is bland, but it is very nutritious. When the fruit is young, the colour is green, soon it turns into a maroon colour when it is ready to harvest. Cut fig in halves, it shows the beautiful pink colour, and some of them have a deep red colour.
The taste so bland but delicious and subtle, it goes with cheese, cured meat and honey. In fact, it can be served with cakes and meat dishes as well.
Fig is a temperate species native in the Middle East. It can be eaten fresh or dried and used in jam-making.
It is commonly sold dried since the ripe fruit does not transport well, and once picked does not keep well. By saying that, you can buy fresh figs in the shop or market, but you may have to consume them quickly.
There are recipes to cook cakes and biscuits from dried figs.

More information from my book New Larousse Gasronomique, about figs: There are three types of figs, the white fig, the purple fig, and the red fig. These three types are subdivided into a large number of varieties.
French figs are grown in the Midi, mostly in Var. The best-known varieties are buissone, bellone, bourjasotte, dauphine violette.
The figs are also grown throughout the whole of the Mediterranean basin. Algeria is the principal supplier of dried figs. (New Larousse Gastronomique)
My potted fig tree, this year has eight fruits.
The young figs are green, change into maroon colour, it is ready to harvest.
In the Bible (Matthew 21:18-22 and Mark 11:12-14, 19-21) there is a story of Jesus finding a fig tree when he was hungry; the tree only had left on it, but no fruit. Jesus, then, curses the fig tree, which withers.
What is your interpretation?. I say that we all have to be fruitful in life, be useful to others, encourage one another, let us all strive well.
Figs are high in natural and simple sugars, minerals and fibre. They contain proper levels of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese. (Read more at Suite 101: Health Benefits of Eating Figs on the Web)
