The Red Roses

My red rose bushes are back in flowers for the second round, they are smaller but as pretty. They were a lot of yellowish leaves at the rose bushes, it took me a long time to get rid of them, but now they are looking better and healthier.

In the back yard, the red rose bushes are flowering too, but the cleaning has not been done, you could see the yellow leaves.  I don't spray the roses, but watering regularly and fertilising when they need be.

More fresh cut red roses to fill up vases.

The beauty of the red roses is that they do not only have lovely scent/fragrance and the gorgeous bright red colour, but I could also use them for different things, such as dried flowers for potpourri, for cordial flavouring and for garnishes and even the petals are excellent for cakes

Drying for potpourri
Instead of throwing away the wilted flowers from the vases, gather the petals, place them on a lined tray with paper. Spread the rose petals on it and put it at a dry place.  It takes a week also to get completely dry.

Garnishes
Wash and dry the roses, use the whole flowers or use the petals.  Sugared rose petals are beautiful for cake decoration.

For baking cakes
Wash and cook the rose petals after cutting the bottom parts which have a bitter taste, boil with water until the petals are soft.  Use the juices for syrup by adding white sugar, use the pulp for cakes.

The family love the rose cakes, especially the grandkids love the mini rose sponge cakes.

I am happy that the rose sponge cake is my very own composition/recipe.

Dressing rose sponge cake with liquor, the icing on top, and decorate with sugared rose petals

Cooking whole poultry can be so festive to garnish with the red rose.  I add the rose petals onto leafy salads, they made pretty and colourful salads.

Trimming and cleaning the rose petals for cooking.

The bottom parts of the petals have a bitter taste, trim them properly before cooking them; otherwise, the taste is unpleasant and bitter.

Last but not least, add the rose petals onto a bowl of water to wash your fingers.  Have a bowl each set up a table when you have dinner parties.
