Winter

Herbs, Roses, Flowers and Fruits
What is happening in my garden, at the moment I am busy pruning the roses and also spraying with lime sulphur after the pruning has been done.  Application of the lime sulphur is essential and a must for having healthy plants.
Mixing the lime sulphur with water has to be done accurately, the mixture has to be used straight away.

The pruning of all roses are done the previous day, so the day of spraying could be applied easier.  It is good to have teamwork, Rayner helped pruned the tall roses and also organised the spray mixture for me, so I could use them effectively, as I have quite a several roses.

For some reason the garden looks sad around winter time, no flowers, the deciduous trees are sleeping, I thought it needs colours to make it brighter.

Cute imitation of bumble bees, ladybirds are living in the garden now. Indeed they work very well, the yellow colour of the bumble bees help the place look less dull.
Patio standard, full standard roses, the bush, miniature, ground cover and climbing roses are pruned, and ready to spray.

Herbs and Orchids
From thyme to Rosemary

The herbs soon will die down during the winter, and they are coming back in spring.  But the orchids have a different story.  It is cold, but they are happy enough to be outside, sitting under the eaves or trees.   Some of the cymbidiums are blooming already and are inside the house.
Beautiful Flowering Cymbidium Orchids

Yesterday I found a few more spikes, they are the late bloomers, these orchids flowers will be at their best around August.

Fruits
The winter wind
The wind can be mighty during winter time, last night was one of them.  As I walked around the backyard this morning to check out the damage done by a strong wind, I found two large pomelo fruits on the ground.  Luckily they are ready to harvest.

This year the fruits are much larger than last year's, and they are very easy to peel, and the taste has improved too, it is sour and sweet but less sharp of bitterness.   In two years, the pomelo tree is going to be more mature, and it will give more abundant fruits with better taste. A right size mature pomelo tastes fresh and less bitter.

Pomelo is a cross between a grapefruit and orange, but the taste is entirely different from both, as it is fresh and tasty, and has no sign of bitterness (WKP)

Pomelo can be eaten fresh as it is or mixed with other fruits and served as fruit salad or added into mixed salads.  I had sweet memories about this fruit when I was little I used to have pink, cream pomelo on 'lotis' (fruit salad), and I knew a lot of artistic people created small animals out of this fruits, such as poodles for decoration of centre tables, they were so cute.

Pomelo is one of the winter fruits from the garden.

White to creamy pomelo flesh
Pomelo Salad
Ingredients
1 cup pomelo flesh
1 cup young cabbage, chopped
1 cup green apple, chopped thinly
1/2 lime juice
(mix the salad ingredients, add the juice and toss them gently)
The dressing
2 tablespoons grated palm sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon tamarind juice
1/2 lime juice and a pinch of salt
(Mix all ingredients together)

The Salad
Place it on a serving plate, add the salad dressing prior serving.
Toss them gently, and serve at once.
The taste should be sweet and sour.

It is one of my pomelo salad recipes.  You can add fish, prawns if you wish.  A very refreshing salad, but it is delightful to serve in winter too.

Until Next Post

Thanks for Visiting
Susy
