Gardening (Continued)

Saturday, as always we have a busy morning, but hopefully, my plan for the afternoon is going to work.
I planned to do gardening, cleaning up all cymbidium orchids before adding fertilisers and slug killer.
I did a few jobs in the garden, but the main one was attending to the orchids, getting ready for the cold weather and the preparation for the next flowering season.   Twenty pots have been cleaned, and the brown leaves have been trimmed.  Added more wood chip bark onto the plants,  watered and moved to a better place which will get morning sun. They all sit under the eaves to protect the plants from the chill and frosts.  Adding potash is so important to encourage more flowers, and adding fertilisers is necessary to have healthy plants.

Cymbidium plants are cleaned and topped up with orchid mixed.

The orchid plants look clean, fresh and healthy.  I hope they stay that way.

I did not forget to put the slag killer on all pots to protect the young leaves and the new spikes from the snails and slugs.  Now the plants have to be at the right place.  Since I don't have an orchids house, being under the eaves is the right home for them.

Behind the Red Roses.
The orchid plants now stay under the eaves and sit behind the red roses where they get morning sun daily.  It was rather tricky to get them there, but in winter time the roses are pruned so the orchid plants will have more room, and they have enough air circulation throughout winter to early spring.

Three orchids please me, two of them have five spikes of each, and another pot has ten spikes, oh I do hope I did not miscount.  Time will tell when they are in full blooms.
A few orchids have only one or two spikes   Overall the cymbidium orchids are doing well, and hopefully the spikes will grow beautifully into perfect flowers.

It is mid-April, the cooler weather is here, and in any case, it is going to be colder, but in my backyard, some roses are still flowering, but a little sad though, that the plants have black spots, yellow leaves and also some fungus. I don't spray my roses, I let them be, for now, soon they will be pruned and rest during winter.

The Roses

Gallipoli Heath is such a natural plant to care for, and it gives beautiful flower and colour.  I got it everywhere in my garden, and it grows so much taller than it was described by Dorothy, who shared the cutting to me.
Gallipoli Heath at its best.
It needs trimming
It is time to trim the plants down, let them rest and they will be back in spring. There are a lot of them, and they need more space, I am thinking to reduce or get rid off some.  Just see.

The plants which are at the front of the standard patio roses grew so tall, they are almost 80 cm,  now they push the branches of the roses.  You know what, at a glance, they look pretty, but they don't look right to be there.

Hydrangea, Climbing Rose Cecile Brunner, and Topiary Plants

My hydrangea plants are well and alive, but they did not flower as well as should be since the drastic pruning last year.  Maybe they are better next time.

But the Cecile Brunner rose is doing great, the small pink flower is so pretty.  I found out only the other day that there is a birds nest there, I must not disturb it, let it be, it is their home

In the front garden: To replant the two potted Lilly Pilly plants needs time and energy, I must do it but not now, however, the topiary plants in the backyard, especially the larger one have been trimmed beautifully by Rayner, and now they look neat and dressed.

There is a lot more work, I suppose, but that is the nature of gardening, it is always there.  However, I am blessed that I could do it, and my family is still there to help me.

It is good to be able to share about gardening this Autumn, next time would be harvest time of Rayner's fruit trees.

Gardening.

We had a peaceful Easter Sunday. On Monday, we started doing the daily routine.  In the afternoon, I attended the orchid plants and also the front garden. A big job is coming.

CYMBIDIUM ORCHIDS
Forty cymbidium orchids, but only three plants are having new spikes.  A few things that I have to remember is how to care orchids,  once flower spikes begin to emerge it will be necessary to prevent damage by slugs and snails as they can consume an emerging flower spike overnight.  Putting snail killer on the pot in time is very important. Feeding and watering should be done in the morning, not overwatering of course, and I have to continue feeding with 'flowering fertiliser'.

The Orchids Plants

Four flower spikes on these potted orchids

Five flower spikes on these potted orchids

More work this weekend, cleaning up, fertilising and putting slugs bites on the orchids.    We will enjoy the flowers within a few months.

CRUCIFIX   ORCHIDS
The flower of the crucifix orchid is so beautiful, it stays there almost the year round.  My cutting or propagating the crucifix orchid is very successful, there are a lot of them, and I already have shared a few.

I enjoy the fresh cut flower of the crucifix orchid too, they are on vases,  they sit so pretty on the kitchen bench.  Indeed they stay fresh for weeks.

In The Front Garden
There are foliage plants, but the theme of the front garden is green and white, both colours work so well, and indeed it is so pretty, the touch of colour from the foliage plants bring the white theme better.

The camellia sasankua plants are in flower, they are beautiful pure white which adorn the front garden, surprisingly the white begonia along the front fence are still flowering.  Soon the frost will get them, then they die down, resting in winter, and they will come back in spring.

White Begonia

TERRARIUM
New mixed plants just arrived for Rayner.  It is an apple shaped terrarium which is full of pretty succulents. It's a gift from our daughter who lives in the Netherlands.  I welcome it with a promise to help, to care for it.

TOPIARY
There is more happening in the garden.  It is so sad to say that my two potted Lilly Pilly - at our entrance are not too well.  I may have to move them somewhere to plant them in the grown. I will replace them with English box topiary plants which have been in pots for the past eleven years.  A massive task for repotting, but it should be good.

This plant is losing leaves.
The Lili Pilli is drying out.

It is never dull moments at Park Lane, gardening is always there, especially if you want a healthy garden.
To be continued.

Easter Crown (Continued)

My Easter Crown is a delicious sweet bread which is served for Easter breakfast for my family and followed by a light but festive cooking.  We understand that overeating rich food in a day celebration is not acceptable. That is what I wish to do this year.

It won't be Easter time without hot cross buns, here I have the Easter buns for the Good Friday.

Another look at Easter Crown, brush the top with melted chocolate and dust with icing sugar, to make more earthy but festive, simply decorate with fresh herbs, edible flowers, chocolate eggs.

Holy Thursday.
Crucifix Orchid Flower

The Crucifix orchid is in flower, the cut flowers now are inside the house for the Easter week, and Easter celebration.

Easter buns were baked,  this time the dough is based on brioche dough, no icing crosses for the buns.  But the buns are filled with sweet candy citrus, sweet currant and raisins.

The Preparation and Baking Easter Buns

Using Brioche Dough

Filling the buns with mixed fruits and candy
brush the buns with egg wash (egg yolk mixed with milk)

After an hour from shaping, the buns are brushed with egg wash.  They are
ready for baking in a hot oven for 18 minutes.
Freshly Baked Easter Buns

Good Friday
Traditional for Good Friday, most people in Australia have hot cross buns.  That's what we did too, but we had the untraditional buns which I baked made of brioche dough.

The buns were based on brioche dough, it 's served warm with jam.

Holy Saturday - Religious point a view.
The last day of Lent.   Holy Saturday is the final day of Lent of Holy Week, and of the Easter Triduum the three days (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) immediately preceding Easter, during which Christians commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ and prepare for His Resurrection  (Wikip)

Preparation for the Easter Feast.
Boiled Easter eggs are for us, I do it every year, and delicious food is served too.  This year I prepared fish for the family.  It is based on Russian pie, Kulebyaka, the filling of the pie is layered spiced rice and salmon, using brioche dough for the pastry.

The prepared pie can be refrigerated for a few days, and baked on the Easter Sunday.  It is convenient, what you need to do on the day is only to prepare the sauce and garnishes.

We have The Easter Crown in the morning, the sweet for the day, it is better to be followed by a light meal.

Preparation for the Pie
Brioche dough, the filling-yellow rice, omelette, salmon, egg for brushing
the dough and the top of the pastry before baking.
The dough is brushed with the egg before putting the omelette.
Layers of yellow rice and chopped salmon for the filling
The sheet of dough, omelette, rice and fresh chopped salmon.

What you need now is more omelette to cover the filling before putting another dough - pastry on top.  Make the sheet of dough slightly larger, cover the top then press the edges to close securely, decorate as you wish.  Brush the pie with egg wash and bake in a moderately hot oven at 175 degrees C for 37 - 42 minutes.
Kulebyaka is ready for baking.

This is my interpretation of the Russian pie 'Kulebyaka.  It looks dark and golden brown after it baked adequately.  Serve warm.
We will have the pie with lemony sorrel sauce and garnish with a salad.

Boiled eggs for our Easter.  These are what you need: fresh eggs,  food colouring or mixed herbs and black tea leaves.  Put them in a pot add in cold water, boil in low heat for 33 minutes.  These eggs have a brownish colour, but if you wish to have patterns on the eggs, specific procedures have to be taken.
The dressed eggs are ready to boil.
Get small leaves, such as mints or lemon balms, place on the egg, wrap in with old stocking to hold them and tighten up properly.

The fresh eggs look so cute before boiling.  Remember that you have to cook them on a low temperature; otherwise, the eggs will crack.

Cooked boiled eggs are drained on a plate.
Added water, colouring and tea bags
The Boiled Eggs

When the eggs are cold, take them out from the cases, open and discard the leaves, let them dry.  Present them as you wish, on a basket or place them on the Easter Crown.

I am glad that I could show you how to prepare the 'kulebyaka' as promised.  I am sure you will do well in time you are cooking yours, and the idea of having Easter crown for a part of the feast is agreeable to you too.

Happy Easter to you all.  Enjoy the family and happy feasting.
